Hello to all Rangers readers,
Welcome to my mythical world - a mediaeval country called Araluen where there are brave heroes and evil villains and conquering armies and the occasional monster that needs slaying.
It's the world of Will, a young boy who is apprenticed to the top secret Ranger Corps - a kind of mediaeval Special Forces Unit who are skilled in the art of camouflage and silent movement, expert shots with the bow and deadly fighters with their two specially designed knives.
I love these books. Years ago, I started writing a series of short stories for my son Mike. There were twenty short stories - about a hundred pages in all. Over a long period of time they sort of grew into the first four books in the series.
Then I discovered that I really like all my main characters, so I wrote another two. And then another one! That one's not published yet. It's just gone to my publishers in Australia.
It's been a long journey since those first hundred pages. But I've tried to make it an exciting journey - and an amusing one as well. Because I believe that humour is an integral part of our lives. I just hope I'm not like one of my characters, Baron Arald. He's always cracking jokes that no one else thinks are funny.
If you're reading this letter you've probably read at least one of the books. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy writing them. And if you do enjoy it, you're lucky - because I've got a lot more Ranger's Apprentice adventures in store for you!
Best regards to you and, as the Rangers say, travel safely.
JOHN FLANAGAN
